4140 bar turning lathe

Help with turning 4140 | The Hobby-Machinist Forum

Feb 25, 2018· I'm trying to turn some 4140 bar on my 12" logan lathe. The surface finish looks rough, literally. Looking at it up close it looks like the metal is tearing off. The 4140 is supposed to be annealed. It is 2" round bar, I am turning at 250rpm. I am using HSS bits for cutting. I am turning down the OD, as well as making an internal 60* cone.

Taking The Fear Out Of Hard Turning : Modern Machine Shop

For hard turning, a lathe must be rigid, have sufficient spindle rpm, and adequate horsepower. A well-maintained CNC (computer numerical control) lathe is a likely candidate for hard turning. The point is, every successful application of hard turning has to be engineered on a case-by-case basis.

chaski.org› …› The Home Machinist!› General DiscussionDec 25, 2009· Never saw 4140 used as a cutting edge tool. 4140 is tougher and more stable than common low carbon cold rolled or hot rolled steel. I think making quick change tool holders would be a good application for 4140 pre-hard. Some like 4140 for making gun parts. 4140 pre-hard is not difficult to machine, similar to A-2.
